The 60-Minute Garage Reset Challenge

Want to Get Organized?

If your garage feels overwhelming, you’re not alone.

For many families, the garage becomes the default storage zone for everything that doesn’t have a clear home: seasonal decorations, sports equipment, tools, paint cans, donation piles, and the random items that somehow accumulate over time. Before you know it, the space that was meant for parking cars turns into a giant catch-all.

And here’s the truth: organizing your entire garage is a big project.

It can take several hours—or even multiple days—to completely sort, declutter, and create systems for everything in that space. That’s why so many people keep putting it off. When a task feels huge, it’s easy to tell yourself you’ll get to it “someday.”

But what if you didn’t try to organize the entire garage?

What if you simply got started?

This 60-Minute Garage Reset Challenge is designed to help you make meaningful progress without the pressure of finishing everything. In just one hour, you can reduce clutter, regain a little space, and build momentum for future organizing.

Before you begin, set yourself up for success with three simple rules:

  1. Set a timer for 60 minutes.
  2. Focus on progress, not perfection.
  3. Stop when the timer ends.

This is about starting—not completing—the project.

Instead of looking at the entire garage, choose one small, manageable area.

Examples include:

  • One shelf
  • One corner
  • A small section of the floor
  • A workbench
  • One storage bin
  • The wall near the door into the house

The goal is to make the project feel doable. When you narrow your focus, it becomes much easier to take action.

Take a few minutes to clear the items from that zone and place them in a temporary sorting area nearby.

As you go through the items, sort them into four simple categories:

Keep – Items you use and need to store in the garage.

Donate – Items in good condition that someone else could use.

Trash/Recycle – Broken or unusable items.

Relocate – Things that belong somewhere else in the house.

Don’t overthink this step. If you haven’t used something in years, it’s probably safe to let it go.

Garages often hold items we keep “just in case,” but those items can quickly crowd the space and make it harder to find the things you actually use.

Now it’s time to put back the items you’re keeping—but with a little more intention.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I use this often?
  • Does it belong near the garage door?
  • Would it be easier to store this on a shelf or in a bin?

Try to group similar items together. For example:

  • Gardening supplies in one area
  • Sports equipment in another
  • Car care items together
  • Tools in a dedicated zone

Even simple grouping can dramatically improve how functional the space feels.

You don’t need perfect containers or fancy systems to make progress. The goal right now is simply creating some order where there was none before.

The final step is quick but important.

Take the trash and recycling out of the garage right away. Then place your donation items in your car or by the front door so they actually leave the house.

If donation items stay in the garage, they often end up sitting there for months.

After completing this challenge, you might notice:

  • A little more open space
  • One area that feels calmer and easier to use
  • Less visual clutter
  • A sense of momentum

And that momentum is powerful.

Once you’ve started, it becomes much easier to come back and tackle another small area another day.

If this challenge felt manageable, you can repeat it over the next few weeks.

Try choosing a different zone each time:

  • Holiday decorations
  • Kids’ outdoor toys
  • Sports gear
  • Gardening supplies
  • Tool storage
  • The floor space near the garage door

Little by little, the garage will start to feel more organized—and far less overwhelming.

The biggest mistake people make when organizing their garage is believing they need a full weekend, a perfect plan, and dozens of storage containers before they begin.

But the truth is, progress happens one small step at a time.

You don’t need to organize the entire garage today.

You just need to start.

And one hour is more than enough to do that.

If your garage (or any space in your home) feels too overwhelming to tackle on your own, you don’t have to do it alone.
