The 2026 Organizing Challenge

Want to Get Organized?

A new year brings fresh energy, fresh goals, and, let’s be honest, the same clutter if we don’t do something different. Instead of vague resolutions that fade by February, let’s start 2026 with a clear, achievable Organizing Challenge designed to simplify your home and your life.

This challenge isn’t about perfection or spending hours decluttering every weekend. It’s about building momentum through small, intentional steps that create real change. By the end of this challenge, you’ll feel lighter, more in control, and ready to take on the year ahead.

This challenge is broken into simple, manageable steps that you can complete in short time blocks. You don’t need special bins, labels, or a full free day—just consistency and a willingness to let go. Set aside 15–30 minutes a day, choose one focus area, and follow the steps below.

Before you start organizing, you need clarity.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want my home to support this year?
  • What areas of my home create the most stress?
  • What would make daily life easier?

Write down one or two goals, such as:

  • “I want calm mornings.”
  • “I want to stop losing things.”
  • “I want my home to feel lighter.”

This mindset shift ensures you’re organizing with purpose—not just moving clutter from one place to another.

One of the biggest organizing mistakes is starting too big. Instead of tackling “the whole house,” start with one small, contained space.

Great places to begin:

  • A junk drawer
  • Your purse or work bag
  • One bathroom cabinet
  • One kitchen drawer

Set a timer for 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, stop—even if you’re not finished. Consistency beats burnout every time.

As you empty your chosen space, sort everything into four categories:

  1. Keep – Items you use regularly and truly need
  2. Donate – Items in good condition you no longer need
  3. Trash – Broken, expired, or unusable items
  4. Relocate – Items that belong somewhere else

This keeps decision-making simple and prevents overthinking.

Before placing items back, ask:

  • Does this item deserve space here?
  • Is this the most convenient home for it?

Store items based on frequency of use, not aesthetics. The items you use daily should be the easiest to access. Less-used items can live higher, lower, or farther away.

Pro tip: If everything doesn’t fit back comfortably, that’s a sign you’re keeping too much.

Organizing only works if your systems are realistic.

Keep it simple:

  • Use open bins for items used daily
  • Label only where it adds clarity
  • Avoid over-categorizing

A good system should answer one question quickly: “Where does this go?”

If it takes more than a few seconds to put something away, the system needs adjusting.

Clutter doesn’t come from lack of organizing—it comes from lack of maintenance.

End each day with a 5–10 minute reset:

  • Clear counters
  • Put items back where they belong
  • Prep for the next morning

This one habit will keep your progress intact and prevent overwhelm from creeping back in.

Over the next few weeks, repeat this process room by room:

  • Entryway
  • Kitchen
  • Bathrooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Storage spaces

There’s no rush. The goal is sustainable change, not a picture-perfect home overnight.

Organizing isn’t about having less—it’s about making space for what matters most. When your home is organized, your time, energy, and mental clarity improve too.

This year, choose progress over perfection. Start small. Stay consistent. And remember: every drawer, cabinet, and corner you organize is a step toward a calmer, more intentional life.
